Well, it looks like they are very serious about this, and we can already get our hands on the first Beta build, which was released this weekend. It’s actually a public Beta release, so anyone can install it using the instructions provided by us below.
What’s new in Birdie 2.0? Well, according to the release notes, quite a lot of things. First, the new version got a massive redesign to make it look gorgeous, one of the best-looking Twitter clients for Linux.
Then, there are a brand new pop-out media viewer, circular avatars, a native Instagram image viewer, DM (Direct Messaging) support with conversation views, link, hashtag, and username highlighting, infinite scrolling, and heart icons for likes.
Additionally, Birdie 2.0 Public Beta ships with support for higher resolution images, implements the ability to go to the top of your Twitter timeline by clicking the home button, along with alerts for new direct messages and mentions.
How to install Birdie 2.0 Public Beta
The first public Beta build of Birdie 2.0 is distributed to users worldwide via a PPA (Personal Package Archive), which means that they can install it quite easily on any Ubuntu-based operating system, including elementary OS, Debian and, of course, Ubuntu (only 16.04 LTS and 14.04 LTS).
To install it, you’ll need to fire up your favorite terminal emulator application and copy/paste the following commands, one by one, hitting the Enter key after each one. The commands help you add the Birdie 2.0 PPA on your system and install the required packages.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install birdie
