The fact of the matter is that we introduced you guys to Descent OS exactly four years ago, back in February 2012, when its developer announced the distribution under the name Descent|OS, which was an Ubuntu derivative using the GNOME 2 desktop environment.
Descent|OS was quite popular at that time, and we even published a separate screenshot tour article at the request of many of our readers. Since then, the distro had a few more releases, and it switched base from Ubuntu to Debian with the Descent|OS 4.0 build.
The last thing we heard from the Descent|OS developer was the fact that he planned on switching the base of the operating system again, making Descent OS 5 an independent release, with no attachment to the Ubuntu or Debian bases. But this was back in August 2013.
Descent OS 5.0 Alpha available for public testing this week
On February 24, 2016, we’ve spotted a message from the developer of Descent OS on reddit, where he announced that a first Alpha build of the upcoming Descent OS 5.0 Linux distribution will be available for public testing by the end of the week, on February 27, 2016, and guess what, Descent OS 5.0 Alpha will be based on the Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) operating system.
“Yes, it looks like the old version 3.0, which was by far my most successful version. I figured as I returned to the Ubuntu base, I should, at least, use the old look with some new modifications,” developer explained. “I’ve got a lot of plans for Descent OS moving forward, but for now, I think this will get us all on the boat again and start this old engine up.”
Below, we’ve attached a screenshot of the upcoming Descent OS 5.0 Alpha build, and let’s hope that it will be a great release and that the developer will have enough time on his hands to keep up with the latest GNU/Linux technologies and no longer abandon the project. Come back on February 27 for an in-depth look at the Descent OS 5.0 Alpha release, and the download links, of course.
Update: A few minutes after publishing our article, the Descent OS developers got in touch with us for more details on what happened with the project, as well as what’s coming. Please read his reddit post, where you can also participate in the conversation and let the developer know what you want to see in Descent OS 5.0.
