VirtualBox 5.0.16 Brings Support for PC Speaker Passthrough on Linux

VirtualBox is updated very often by the Oral developers, and lots of maintenance releases are offered during a support cycle. This is a very powerful application, but it’s also very complex, so developers need to keep it updated.

Oracle provides support application for multiple platforms, including Linux, so many of the entries in the changelog are actually for other operating systems and don’t really apply. There are a couple of things that are directly related to Linux systems, but it’s nothing out of the ordinary.

According to the changelog, a problem that could lead to a wrong guest behavior on AMD CPUs has been fixed, and the HID LEDs are no longer synchronized if the VM window is not active or if it’s minimized. Moreover, a crash that occurred during startup under rare circumstances has been corrected, the position of the off-screen windows makes them fully visible again on relaunch, and PC speaker passthrough has been added to Linux systems.

Also, some changes to the default audio device have been made, several fixes for the xHCI controller have been implemented, and a failure to load the saved state under certain circumstances has been fixed. Also worth mentioning is that support for (cached) Active Directory authentication in case the domain controller is not reachable has been added, the number of serial ports have been raised per VM from 2 to 4, Python files installed by the .run installer are now properly removed on Linux systems, and many more smaller fixes have been implemented.
